Monitoring marine animal strandings

The Marine Strandings Network records and monitors dead marine wildlife strandings across Devon. We work in partnership with the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Progamme (DEFRA Funded) and University of Exeter to lead on marine strandings work for Devon.

We have trained over 100 volunteers who respond to reports of deceased marine animals. They collect important information about the animals, take images and measurements and where possible send them off for postmortem.

The data collected is vital to improving our understanding of animal populations, distribution and health, as well as the threats facing our marine wildlife. These include bycatch from fishing, pollution and more extreme winter storms.

Marine strandings can tell us a lot about wildlife which we can't otherwise see. By reporting a live or dead stranded dolphin, seal or porpoise, you can help us understand more about our marine world and campaign for better protection of our seas.

Do you know what to do if you see a marine stranding?

Autumn and winter storms can see more marine animals being brought up onto our shores. Finding one can be distressing, but it's important that you know what to do when you see one!

Is the animal alive? Please call British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) immediately on 01825 765546 (office hours) or 07787 433412 (out of hours). Keep your distance, and keep other people and dogs away.

Is the animal dead? Please call Devon Marine Strandings Network on 01392 361796 or email strandings@devonwildlifetrust.org. Please include photos, a location and when you found it.
