Tilly’s Hedgehog Walk for Devon's Wildlife

When eight-year-old Tilly Burton signed up for the Hedgehog Walk, she wasn't just looking for a challenge. She wanted to do something positive for the local wildlife she loves.

Did you know a hedgehog can travel up to 3km in a single night?

That's why every spring, as hedgehogs emerge from hibernation, families, schools, clubs and learning groups across the county take on the Hedgehog Walk challenge, walking 3km to raise vital funds for Devon Wildlife Trust.

Going the Extra Mile

A keen nature enthusiast and Brownie, Tilly decided to take part while working towards a Brownie badge and help wildlife along the way.

Although the Hedgehog Walk challenge set a target of 3km, Tilly decided to push herself even further, completing a 6km walk at Westward Ho! on Kipling Moor.

“I did double it because I wanted a challenge. I loved climbing up the steep slopes although my legs did ache!”

And it wasn't just Tilly who was up for the challenge:

“I did the walk in three stages because my little brother Elijah also did it all with me too. My mum, dad, grannie, grandad and even my great grannie (who is nearly 83) joined me for some of the walk up over the moor. It was quite steep!”

Raising Funds for Wildlife

By taking on the Hedgehog Walk challenge, Tilly raised £80 for Devon’s wildlife, with her brother raising additional funds too.

She’s already got more plans for wildlife adventures, telling us:

“I love going to walks around woods and parks so hope do some more and spot some animals. After the walk I went explore some rockpools and found a crab. I love animals!”

And as for her very favourite species to spot?

"Hedgehogs and foxes because they are cute, and I've had a hedgehog in my garden before."
