Wildfire at Barley Valley Park

Wildfire at Barley Valley Park

On Friday evening (7th August), a wildfire broke out at Barley Valley Park in Exeter.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who reported the fire at Barley Valley Park and to the eight firefighter crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service who worked quickly to bring it under control, protecting the local community and preventing the fire from spreading further.

Around 3 acres of grassland, scrub and woodland were sadly lost. This area was home to a wide range of plants and wildlife, including fields of wildflowers, common lizards, slow worms, ants, small mammals, butterflies and birds. Also, grazing cattle which were fortunately unharmed.

Our Reserves Team has been assessing the impact and identifying how we can support wildlife’s recovery. Repairs are already underway, and the site is now open again. However, we ask all visitors to remain vigilant, as the risk of wildfires is still very high.

How you can help protect wildlife from wildfires:

  • BBQ at home, not in the countryside
  • Never light campfires or other open fires
  • Take all litter home, especially cigarette ends and glass bottles
  • If you spot a wildfire, call 999 immediately and give the exact location

You can also support our work for wildlife. Every donation helps us care for and restore precious habitats and protect the wildlife that depends on them.

Thank you for taking extra care when visiting our nature reserves and other wild places!
