About the event

When John Whetman and Audrey Compton first moved to Deer Park Farm they had their work cut out to bring back the biodiversity. Although the farm was already a County Wildlife Site, a combination of overgrazing, neglect and applications of artificial fertiliser made it difficult to know how diverse the farm actually was. However, through careful land management they have successfully restored their nearly 40 acres of ancient grassland and hay meadows, which now support over 350 species of wildflowers, including thousands of Green-winged Orchids. Their fantastic achievement was recognised when they won the England Meadow and Grasslands Award in 2015.

This event is organised by DWT Bovey Tracey Local Group.

Know before you go:

  • We will meet in front of Farm House (what3words: W3W: hike/winded/sideburns)
  • No entrance fee but suggested £5 donation
  • Toilet facilities on site
  • Limited parking around the farm yard
  • There are many steep gradients and no defined paths in places, and there will be standing for 2 hours. Therefore this event is unsuitable for wheelchairs and those with mobility problems
  • Wear sturdy footwear, waterproof clothing, and wear sun protection
  • An assessment of the weather conditions will be made on the Friday prior to the event

Directions:

Leave the B3193 at Crocombe Bridge, signed to Trusham. Turn right after crossing the river and the old railway line. Go up the hill, and then turn left down the farm track at SX 856 814 to meet in the farmyard. There is parking for about 14 cars, but car-sharing is strongly recommended to reduce CO2 emissions and avoid congestion on steep farm track.
