SITA Trust special project - Woodah hedgerow restoration

Hedge_viewIn January 2011 Devon Wildlife Trust were awarded £25,000 to help fund conservation work at its farm in the Teign Valley. The funding will play an important part in improving habitat for rare bats.

DWT has been awarded the money by SITA Trust through its enriching nature funding programme. The financial help will go towards major restoration of hedgerows at Woodah Farm near Doddiscombsleigh. The farm is a 65 hectare holding and home to the charity’s nature reserves team.

The extensive network of neglected Devon hedgerows are a vital link in the landscape, particularly for the greater andHedge_layer_at_work lesser horseshoe bats that roost in the neighbouring caves. Both species use hedgerows as foraging routes and also take insects directly from hedge foliage.

The project will help in delivering specific habitat improvements on this important site. The work will be staggered over a three year period. Much of the restoration will be carried out with the help of volunteers and Devon Rural Skills Trust who will also be delivering public training days as part of the project.

The funding will also benefit DWT with some of the money helping to purchase a bat monitoring device. Hedge_close_upThis will be used to record which hedgerows are most frequently used across the farm and to evaluate the success of the project.

The SITA Trust's panel of biodiversity experts were very impressed with both the benefits to wildlife this project offers and the involvement of the general public in delivering these benefits.
