Scrub management

Scrub is an important and valued constituent of many of the reserves. It can however become too dominant where sites have had periods of little or no management, particularly where grassland sites have been ungrazed for a number of years.

This is often the case when DWT first takes responsibility for a new reserve which then requires restoration management for the first few years. This usually involves a focused effort in reducing the area of scrub on a reserve. Once the right level has been achieved the scrub is managed as any other habitat on the reserve with small areas being cut each year to provide a varying age structure.
