Charity wants you to have a wild Christmas

Alex Mustard

Are you up for celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas by going wild? In an outdoors sense, of course.

This is the challenge Devon Wildlife Trust is setting local people over the festive season. #12DaysWild is the name of its mini-Christmas challenge, encouraging you to do one wild thing a day, starting on the 25th December and finishing on the 5th January.

The challenge is aimed at everyone – from toddlers upwards. You just need to be wild at heart. All people need to do is to sign up here. It’s free to take part.

Spending time in nature can make you feel happier and healthier, so we want people to take a moment for themselves this winter and enjoy our wonderful winter wildlife.

There they’ll find a wild suggestion for each of the 12 days of Christmas. The activities are a mix of easy and inexpensive things to do and include:

  • How to make an edible Christmas wreath for local wildlife to feast on
  • How to investigate and identify animal tracks
  • A guide to finding winter fungi
  • Discovering which feather belongs to which wild bird

Devon Wildlife Trust’s Zoe Hughes says:

“12 Days Wild is our festive nature challenge, encouraging you to do one wild thing a day from the 25th December to the 5th January each year. In those weird days between Christmas and New Year, winter wildlife is just waiting to be explored! Your wild acts could be little things to help nature - like recycling your Christmas tree or feeding the birds – or ways to connect to the natural world, like walking off your Christmas dinner in the woods or admiring the beauty of a winter sunset.

Spending time in nature can make you feel happier and healthier, so we want people to take a moment for themselves this winter and enjoy our wonderful winter wildlife. Random acts of wildness can help to cure your winter blues!”
