about DWT

joinIn this section you can find out more about the Devon Wildlife Trust. Set up in 1962 as the Devon Naturalists Trust, it is now considered an authority on wildlife issues in the county.

Broad Bodied Chaser - G BlackDevon Wildlife Trust's vision for Devon:

  • A place where the future of wildlife is secure - DWT strives to safeguard threatened species and landscapes.
  • A place where wildlife is plentiful, varied and widespread - DWT works with all kinds - in the city and in the countryside, on land and in our seas.
  • A place where the benefits of wildlife are shared and enjoyed by all - DWT works for people too, giving everyone the chance to share and enjoy Devon's natural heritage and help secure it for future generations.

Established as a registered charity in 1962, the Devon Wildlife Trust has a unique and influential position. Unique because it is the only organisation concerned with all aspects of wildlife conservation in Devon. Influential because it is a member of The Wildlife Trusts partnership, a nationwide network dedicated to the achievement of a UK richer in wildlife.

Between us we have more than a quarter of a million members and care for over 2,000 nature reserves. DWT works closely with many other organisations, including neighbouring Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Dorset Wildlife Trust, and Somerset Wildlife Trust.

Around 50 full-time staff, mainly based at Cricklepit Mill in Exeter, work in a range of areas to achieve our common aim for wildlife.

With nature reserves throughout the county, DWT is closely involved in land and marine management, surveying, policy formulation and education. DWT employs highly qualified staff trained in all aspects of wildlife conservation. Hundreds of people, members and others, work on a voluntary basis; organising walks and talks, local conservation projects, monitoring local wildlife and raising funds.

For a more detailed description of DWT's aims read the DWT Manifesto.pdf
