Habitats

Devon is rich in species because it is rich in habitats. Habitat is quite a confusing word, because it partly describes a area an animal or plant inhabits. However, the particular species gather because of the prevailing conditions - how wet or dry, warm or cold it is, what minerals and nutrients it holds, how well it drains, that sort of thing.

Human use of the land often changes such things, making wet areas drier, adding nutrients, removing hedges and, in the end, reducing the range of 'niches' - suitable homes - which species like to live in.

Devon is blessed with a great variety of different habitats – we have listed the ones that we think are of greatest importance.
