East Devon Heath Week

Heathweek_Festival_2008East Devon Heath Week is an annual series of events that aim to celebrate the fantastic heathland landscape of the region. Each year it takes place at the end of July, probably the opportune time to see heathland and its wildlife at its best.

Heath Week Family festival day - Sun 29 July

11am–3.30pm
Woodbury Castle,near Exmouth
A fun day for the whole family with walks, crafts, displays and much more at Woodbury Castle (grid ref SY 033 873), near Exmouth - follow the AA road signs. Drop in for an hour or two, or stay all day. Find out more

Bystock_NRODHeath Week Bystock Nature Reserve Open Day - Tue 31 July
11am - 3.30pm
Bystock nature reserve
Join a guided wildlife walk, get involved in children’s activities or help with the heathland management of this site. If you are staying all day bring a packed lunch. All tools will be provided, wear suitable clothing. Meet at the north entrance to the reserve at grid ref SY 030 849. Find out more

Heath Week Bats at Bystock - Wed 1 & Thu 2 August
8.30-10.30pm
Join Ian Chadwick, DWT Nature Reserves Officer, for a walk around Bystock nature reserve to discover which bats can be found there. Bat detectors will be provided to help identify the bats by their different calls. Uneven terrain, so stout footwear required. Don't forget your torch. Meet at the reserve’s north entrance. What will we see?

Dartfordwarbler_Chris_Root

There are specific events which will concentrate on different species that make lowland heath their home. Particular favourites are bat walks, pond dipping days and reptile hunts. One of the stars of the show is the rare Dartford warbler, (pictured right).

East Devon Heath Week is organised by the RSPB, Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, East Devon District Council, Devon County Council and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
