Devon Wildlife Trust runs a number of courses and training opportunities each year on a variety of subjects such as hedgelaying, species identification and wildlife photography. For more information about upcoming events please view the events below:

Devon Biodiversity Records Centre Habitat Survey and Plant Identification Training Courses 2013

After the success of last year's habitat survey and plant identification courses we are running the same courses this year plus an additional one day course on winter twig identification. These courses are ideal for conservation professionals and consultants providing skills valuable for Continual Personal Development.

Beginners and people with little plant identification/survey experience are welcome.


Woodland plant identification course


25th/26th April, Woodah Farm nr Exeter
£160 (early bird-before end of March)/
£200 +VAT


Bluebells_DBRCThis course will provide an introduction to woodland ecology, woodland survey and woodland plant identification.  Emphasis will be made on practical survey experience and plant identification. Course participants will visit a range of woodland types located at nearby County Wildlife Sites and Devon Wildlife Trust reserves.  By the end of the course, participants will be familiar with a variety of woodland habitat types and will be confident with the identification of a range of tree, shrub and ground flora species.

Additional topics covered within the course will include woodland management, invasive species identification and woodland survey technique.

Grassland plant identification course


27th/28th June & 4th/5th July, Woodah Farm nr Exeter
£160 (earlybird-end of May) /£200 +VAT


Stachys_officinalisDBRCThis course will provide an introduction to grassland plant identification, grassland ecology and survey.  Emphasis will be made on practical survey experience and plant identification, particularly identification using vegetative features. Course participants will visit a range of grassland habitats located at nearby County Wildlife Sites and Devon Wildlife Trust reserves.  By the end of the course, participants will be familiar with a variety of grassland habitat types and will be confident with the identification of a range of grass, rush, sedge and herbaceous species.  Course attendees will be familiar with unimproved, semi-improved and improved swards and will have a greater understanding of how physical features (such as hydrology and pH) affect grassland sward composition.

Additional topics covered within the course will include grassland management, classification and survey technique.
